Every February, the nation turns its attention to the profound contributions of Black Americans. It is a dedicated time to commemorate history, culture, and the resilience that has shaped the United States. While history books often focus on national figures who changed the course of civil rights and innovation, history is also written on a local level, in the streets of our towns and the businesses that anchor our communities.

Atchison Transportation Services is proud to participate in this celebration. However, for us, Black History Month is more than a general observance. It is a deeply personal opportunity to honor a visionary who built a legacy of excellence right here in Spartanburg: Mr. Charles E. Atchison, Sr.

The story of Black history is often told through grand moments, but it is equally defined by the daily triumphs of individuals who dared to dream bigger than their circumstances allowed. This month, we reflect on the power of vision, the importance of economic empowerment, and the enduring impact one man can have on his community.

The Power of Black History Month

The popularity and visibility of Black History Month have risen significantly in recent years, offering a vital opportunity for all Americans to develop a deeper appreciation for the contributions Black Americans have made over centuries. It is a time to spotlight achievements that have often been overlooked and to educate ourselves on the triumphs of many.

This acknowledgement of culture and heritage serves a dual purpose. First, it honors the past. We look back to understand the foundations upon which our current society is built. Second, it informs our future. By taking the time to learn about the unique experiences and perspectives of those who have been marginalized, we move closer to creating a more just and equitable world for everyone.

Education is the bridge between these two points. When we understand the barriers that were broken by those who came before us, we gain inspiration for the challenges we face today. Every American benefits from these achievements, and throughout February, we are reminded that excellence knows no boundaries.

A Visionary in Spartanburg

Local history provides some of the most tangible examples of this excellence. The story of Charles E. Atchison, Sr. is a remarkable testament to vision, dedication, and community impact.

His journey as an entrepreneur began in 1949. To understand the magnitude of his achievement, one must consider the historical context. Starting a business in the late 1940s in the South presented hurdles that are difficult to imagine today. Yet, armed with a strong work ethic and a clear vision, Mr. Atchison launched his venture with a single taxi.

That single taxi represented more than just a mode of transport; it represented independence and determination. In an era where opportunities for Black entrepreneurs were severely limited, Mr. Atchison did not just carve out a space for himself—he built a foundation for others.

Growing a Fleet, Building a Community

From that humble beginning in 1949, Mr. Atchison grew his venture into a thriving ground transportation service. His success was not accidental. It was the result of an unwavering commitment to service and a standard of professionalism that set him apart.

As the business expanded, so did his impact on Spartanburg. A thriving business does more than generate profit; it supports the livelihood of neighbors and friends. Mr. Atchison’s company created countless job opportunities over the decades. By providing stable employment, he contributed extensively to the economic well-being of the local community.

This is a crucial aspect of Black history that deserves recognition: the role of Black-owned businesses in stabilizing and uplifting communities. Mr. Atchison didn’t just drive people to their destinations; he drove economic progress in his city.

Setting New Benchmarks for Excellence

Mr. Atchison was renowned for his work ethic. His influence transcended the transportation industry, setting new benchmarks for excellence in business operations. He demonstrated that quality service and integrity are universal languages that build trust and longevity.

His legacy teaches us several key lessons about entrepreneurship and leadership:

  • Start where you are: He began with one vehicle. He didn’t wait for perfect conditions to start building his dream.
  • Commit to service: The growth of the company was fueled by a reputation for reliability.
  • Uplift others: His success was shared with the community through job creation and involvement.

Today, Atchison Transportation Services stands as a living monument to these values. The benchmarks he set decades ago continue to guide the company’s operations today.

Learning from the Past to Shape the Future

Celebrating Black History Month is an active process. It requires us to listen, learn, and remember. When we share stories like that of Charles E. Atchison, Sr., we ensure that the struggles and successes of the past are not lost to time.

It is important to remember that these accomplishments occurred despite systemic challenges. Acknowledging this history helps us understand the resilience required to achieve such success. It also highlights the importance of fostering an environment where aspiring entrepreneurs from all backgrounds have the support they need to succeed.

As we educate ourselves on these unique perspectives, we gain a fuller, richer understanding of American history. We learn that history is made by people who show up every day, do the work, and care for their community.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

This February, as we honor the incredible achievements of Black Americans throughout the history of our country, let us look to local legends for inspiration. Charles E. Atchison, Sr. turned a single taxi into a legacy that has served Spartanburg for generations.

His story reminds us that vision, coupled with hard work, can change the landscape of a community. Atchison Transportation Services remains dedicated to the principles he established: service, excellence, and community care.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this history. Whether by supporting Black-owned businesses, educating yourself on local history, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the contributions of those who paved the way, we can all play a part in honoring this essential heritage.

A Quick History of Black History Month

Black History Month has its roots in “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Woodson, who was a historian, believed that it was important to remember and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans throughout history. Negro History Week was originally celebrated during the second week of February because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Two men who had a significant impact on the lives of African Americans.

In 1976, Negro History Week was expanded to become Black History Month. During this month, we take time to remember and celebrate the achievements of African Americans in all walks of life, from politics and business to sports and entertainment. We also use this time to educate ourselves and others about the unique experiences and perspectives of African Americans. This is an important part of creating a more just and equitable society for everyone.

There are many fun and meaningful ways to celebrate Black History Month.
  • Consider hosting a dinner party with food from various African countries.
  • Order food from a local Black-owned restaurant.
  • Watch family-friendly movies that feature inspiring black people.
  • Listen to empowering speeches by prominent African Americans.
Other ideas for celebrating include:
  • Reading or discussing books about Black history.
  • Volunteering your time with a Black community organization.
  • Hold a virtual event to bring together friends and family in commemorating this important month.

Make it special and have some fun. There’s no wrong way to honor the contributions of Black individuals!

Black History Month is an important time for us to remember and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans throughout history. It is also a time for us to learn more about the unique experiences and perspectives of those who have often been marginalized in our society. By taking this time to educate ourselves, we can move closer to creating a more just and equitable world for everyone.

This February, Atchison Transportation Services is proud to celebrate Black History Month. As a time to commemorate the incredible achievements of Black Americans throughout the history of our country, this acknowledgement of culture and heritage continues to educate all Americans on the amazing triumphs of many.

With the popularity of Black History Month rising, there has never been a greater opportunity for Americans to develop an appreciation of the contributions Black Americans have made over the years.

Every American can be inspired—and in some way benefits—from these achievements put in the spotlight over the month of February.

Make Your Celebration Interactive in the Home

There are many ways Americans can celebrate Black History Month this month. One area where stereotypes still reign is around food. Therefore, all Americans would benefit from setting aside some time to enjoy and learn about some of the influence Black Americans made to the cuisine of our country.

For one example, take a look at this article from the Today Show discussing over 50 recipes from Black chefs that feature influences from regions of the world like West Africa, the Caribbean, and more! You can even pick up a copy of the new Black Food cookbook for your home.

Raising up a New Generation of Grateful Americans

There is no doubt the greatest influence on those in the next generation is still the family members currently rearing them. No matter the skin tone, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, and grandparents have an opportunity to educate those in their care on the contributions made by Black Americans.

Spending time exploring the leaders, legends, and legacies of Black Americans this month will help kids of all ages appreciate their own experience and understand their own potential. One example of a lesser-known name to consider is Rebecca Lee Crumpler. Crumpler was the first Black woman in the US to qualify as a doctor and opened her own clinic in Boston to treat people who lived in poverty.

Another name to know is Claudette Colvin. Take some time to read up on her story and learn how it inspired another icon of Black History we all know today.

It is near impossible for any American to not be inspired by these incredible stories of bravery and determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. Therefore, we encourage you to celebrate Black History alongside us!

Our very own, Charles E. Atchison, was featured on The Block for Black History Month.  Mr. Atchison is a native to Spartanburg, South Carolina.  In an area that has not always been the most accepting of minorities, Charles has made a successful company with well-earned respect from his hard work and sacrifice.

“Charles began by delivering packages and prescriptions for the late Steve Ashcraft, of Craft’s Drugstores in Spartanburg. He became well known in the community for his service, promptness, and concern for both his customers and clients. Not only did he provide package delivery service, he was, also, transporting passengers in his cab from early morning to late night, while never losing sight of the importance of his family and friends. During these early years, he had the foresight to learn to set taxi meters (which no one else could do locally) and to see the value of a central dispatch system and utilized this knowledge to organize independent cab drivers into the largest taxi service in the Upstate. During the 1960’s, he operated approximately 75 taxis. However, the increased use of individual automobiles, combined with public transportation, has decreased the demand for cabs. Charles, being a visionary, continually looked for new avenues in which to grow his business.”
