Charles E. Atchison, Sr.’s legacy is a profound testament to vision, determination, and community impact. A proud native of Spartanburg, Mr. Atchison founded his transportation business in April 1949, starting with just one taxi cab at a time when gas was merely 18 cents per gallon.
During the early years of his business, Charles demonstrated remarkable foresight, teaching himself to set taxi meters and implementing a central dispatch system. This ingenuity allowed him to unify independent cab drivers into the largest taxi service in Upstate South Carolina. By the 1960s, he was operating a fleet of 75 taxis.
Never one to rest on past achievements, Charles founded Airport Limousine Service (ALS) in 1974 to provide dependable transportation for passengers at the newly constructed Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. For over 30 years, ALS served as the airport's primary transportation provider. He further expanded his operations in 1985 with the establishment of Atchison Charter Service, starting with a single 47-passenger bus.
Through tireless dedication, he expanded his venture into a thriving ground transportation service, employing over 70 workers and creating a significant economic impact in the local community.
Charles was much more than a successful entrepreneur. Serving as a leader, mentor, and role model, particularly within Spartanburg’s minority community, he inspired countless others. His legacy continues to live on, a shining example of how determination and investment in people can create lasting change.
Honoring his extraordinary life, Mr. Atchison passed away in November 2024. His contributions remain woven into the fabric of Spartanburg, solidifying his legacy as a beloved figure and a driving force for positive change in the area.
